During our very exciting climb to the top of this industry, we got a lot of calls for waterproofing. We had no idea that there were any basements in the State of Florida. Well there are lots of basements in Florida (to my surprise) although the majority of Waterproofing calls came from homes that are built with a slab on grade construction and the floors are getting wet in the rain season or during periods of heavy rain. We specialized in basement waterproofing in Cincinnati but never expected to do any waterproofing projects in Florida.

During our first year in Florida we studied the Florida Building Code along with Florida Water table and soil conditions. To our surprise we could not find a waterproofing building code! Florida has a high water table through out most of the state so waterproofing codes do not exist, so Florida building code has elevation codes that require the first floor elevation to be 12″ above finish exterior grade. This is were the problem is when homes are built there are no floor elevation inspections when the CO is given after the home is complete, unless you are in a flood zone.

If you can walk out your front or back door and there is no step down or a downward slope falling away from the home than this could be an issue at some point. When homes are built the original landscape is altered and water tables will change do to a number of different factors. If your home is at existing ground elevation and you are having issues during the rain season (high humidity, musty smells, damp floors, hardwood floor cupping or discoloration) call us for a free inspection. Remember this problem will only get worse as time passes causing damage to the interior finishes.
